On Sunday, Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 51-ball 66 wasn’t enough for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to go over the line against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The New Zealand cricketer batted until the very end and hit eight fours in his knock, taking the game to the Super Over. However, it was the Capitals, who came out trumps in the one-over eliminator.
In the Super Over, Williamson hit left-arm spinner Axar Patel for a four, thereby setting a target of eight for DC, who crossed the hurdle off the last ball. After the loss at the Chepauk, the Tauranga-born Williamson stated that ‘he’s tired’ of being on the losing side in Super Overs.
Kane Williamson opens up
“I get tired of coming second in Super Overs. I think whenever there is a Super Over, as a batting side chasing a very competitive score, there’s a lot of positives to take out of it. Very uncanny, in the game of cricket, the things can end up in a tie.
“But I suppose that’s why it’s very very exciting. I am sure it was a great game to watch as well. So, a lot of positives, and we will move on very quickly to Delhi with a new focus,” Williamson was quoted as saying after the match.
Back in 2019, the Black Caps, led by Kane, lost the 2019 World Cup final after the boundary-count rule. Thereafter, the Kiwis were involved in three Super Over defeats- one against England and two against India. All three games took place in their home conditions.
Back in the 2020 IPL, the Sunrisers lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in yet another Super Over clash. In that game, Williamson made a 19-ball 29 with four fours and one six after opening the batting along with Jonny Bairstow. It was Lockie Ferguson, who dismissed him back then.
As of now, the Orange Army are placed at seventh in the points table with one win from five matches with a net run rate of -0.180. Their next match is against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday, April 28 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
