After this decision of Ashwin, the word 'retired out' has started trending on social media, so let's know what was the reason behind Ashwin's retirement.
What is this retired out after all?
- Before talking about Ashwin's decision, let us understand what is this retired out.
- A batsman is considered retired when he returns to the pavilion without informing the umpire and the captain of the opposition team and without their consent. Rule 25.4 of the ICC lays down the rules for a batsman to retire.
- According to its rule 25.4.1, a batsman may retire at any time if the ball is not bowled. Before the start of play, however, the umpire has to explain the reason for the batsman's withdrawal. Only then is the next ball bowled.
- According to Rule 25.4.2, if the batsman is in a disease, injury and any serious situation which cannot be sidelined and is unable to play and returns to the pavilion, in that case the batsman is called retired not out.
- According to Rule 25.4.3, if the batsman returns to the pavilion for any reason other than as stated in 25.4.2, in that case only with the permission of the captain of the opposition, that batsman may return to the crease to bat. If the captain of the opposing team does not give permission and his batting cannot continue, then that batsman is considered retired.
- There is a big difference between retired out and retired hurt. In retired out, the batsman cannot return, whereas in retired out, the batsman can return to the field to bat later. Retired out and retired not out can happen only at the end of a team's innings.
Why Ashwin retired out
Rajasthan had lost four wickets for 67 runs. Then Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal and Russi van der Dussen had returned to the pavilion. After this the team management of Rajasthan sent Ravichandran Ashwin above Riyan Parag. This decision of Rajasthan proved to be correct. Ashwin along with Shimron Hetmyer batted well and prevented the wickets from falling.
Later, Ashwin felt that Riyan Parag was yet to come and he could take a better shot than him, so he decided to retire. Ashwin shared a 68-run partnership with Hetmyer. When Ashwin returned to the pavilion without informing umpire and Lucknow captain KL Rahul, Rajasthan's score was 135 runs.
Ashwin retired after scoring 28 off 23 balls. He hit two sixes in his innings. After this Riyan Parag came on the field. Parag along with Shimron Hetmyer took Rajasthan to 165 runs. Hetmyer played an unbeaten innings of 59 runs off 36 balls with the help of one four and six sixes.
